Ponce Wooderson – I Am Austin – Unisex Soft Cotton T Shirt

The enigmatic self-proclaimed Austin “Migas Maven” grew up one of 13 kids on a hardscrabble cedar chopper ranch in the Hill County northwest of Austin.  When the Wooderson homestead was foreclosed on by a Boerne banker, Ponce left home for the streets of Austin at 15.  He scratched out a living smuggling cases of  Coors Beer from Durant, Oklahoma to Austin in a re-purposed 1961 Wonder Bread truck with a fake ID crafted by tarot card reader Madam Chappeau on South Congress who read futures and printed Texas DL’s in a grounded Big Red tractor trailer. 

Legend has it he drained a bootleg keg of Pearl Light straight from the tap in 45 minutes in the parking lot of a Circle K on North Lamar.  He also grew the largest flowering Oaxacan weed plant (12 ft tall) ever seen in Austin, from a single dime bag seed in a vacant lot off Comal and East 3rd. 

Ponce, a gentle giant, bounced at clubs all over Austin, played string bass in various Austin bands, sold leather goods from a boosted three wheeled Piggly Wiggly shopping cart on The Drag and busked on 6th Street.  He did imperfect impressions of inanimate objects and heart-warming ventriloquism with a found Eeyore doll.  With no formal education and no particular skill set, Ponce was a grifter and a confidence man, but of the amiable sort and never with ill intentions.

Fondly known by friends as “Big Taco”, Ponce Wooderson was Austin’s everyman, just livin’ life in the best little college town on earth. The prototype of the longhaired redneck hippie boheme that came to define the town in the ’70’s. Ponce Wooderson is Austin.
